Full Review – Louisiana Grills Country Smoker CS-680 Pellet Grill
Louisiana Grills, through their various brand names is one of the largest pellet grill manufacturers in the world. They have a dozen models and this is one of their least expensive. Stripped down to its basics, this model is comparable to similar models from Traeger, the inventor of the pellet grill. The one feature that stands out about this model and those in its line is the superior pellet controller. This is the standard 5-degree increment digital controller, but with a meat temperature probe built in. Something you don't typically see in this price range (this model sells for around $1,100USD).
While this is a nice feature, don't expect this pellet grill to do much more than those models you generally find in retail stores. The CS-680 can be found in places like Ace Hardware, specialty retailers, and online and at this price it is a pretty good option. The pellet hopper is almost unusually small in this model. The 12-pound capacity will have trouble doing a long cook in cold or windy conditions, but it isn't a problem to refill as long as you are present to do so.
The body of this grill is relatively thin powder coated steel and it doesn't do a great job of retaining heat, so this isn't the most efficient of pellet grills, but comparable to similar models. There isn't an easy way to clean out the ashes from this model so a shop-vac is a nice thing to have on hand.
Aside from the extra features of the controller, there isn't anything that much that stands out here. Louisiana Grills, part of Danson, is a large company and they have been in the pellet grill business since around the time that the Traeger patents expired and everyone started making pellet grills. Their support is good and I believe that they will be in this market for a long time to come. The Country Smoker line is made in Canada while their less expensive Louisiana Grills line is made in China.
