Weber stands out as a top name in the outdoor cooking industry. In the mid-1980s, they revolutionized the market with their first gas grill, followed later by the high-end Summit line. From there, an insert or built-in model was the next logical step. What sets Weber grills apart are unique design features, particularly the grease management system. The Summit S-460’s deep cooking chamber means it won’t fit into a standard cutout of a custom enclosure, hence the full-height body.
Summit S-460 Design
This design has its advantages. A sleeve is not required to place the grill insert, and there’s cabinet space under the grill for storage. The grill is available in propane or natural gas, but it cannot be converted. For a straightforward DIY outdoor kitchen, the best option is to purchase the grill in a propane configuration and place it into a simple custom structure.
But wait! There’s more. This grill is packed with extras, including a good-sized four-burner gas grill with a sear burner, smoker burner, and a rotisserie burner. This grill also has seven control knobs. With that said, you might be wondering if you should invest in this gas grill.
Summit S-460 – Stainless Steel
First of all, this grill has stainless steel parts, but it isn’t a stainless steel grill. The cooking chamber uses a cast aluminum bottom. The box it fits into is enamel-coated steel. Scratch that enamel and it will rust.
Is the Summit S-460 a spectacular grill? It’s good but not stellar. The heat output is relatively low. The sear burner is an extra gas burner that makes a small section of the grill hotter than the remaining cooking surface. The smoker burner is okay, but the grill doesn’t hold smoke and will not impart that deep smoke flavor to food.
All in all, the Summit S-460 is a decent choice. As mentioned, this grill is one of the quickest and easiest ways to set up an outdoor kitchen. Additionally, you can rely on Weber’s excellent customer support. As long as the grill is under warranty, you should have no trouble getting it repaired if anything goes wrong (normal wear and tear is not covered).
