Combination grills are a mainstay of big box stores. They love them, and these grills are sold. Consumers believe that grills like the Char-Griller Double Play are the answer to all their needs. They’ll have the convenience of gas on one side and the flavorful experience of charcoal on the other. However, despite the appeal, the reality is that most users tend to favor the gas side of the grill, utilizing it about 90% of the time. That raises questions about whether these combination grills truly offer the solution that they promise.
Ultimately, the Char-Griller Double Play is two grills mounted on a single cart and sells for $450. The gas side is the Char-Griller 3-Burner, which normally retails for $275. The charcoal side is the Char-Griller Wrangler, which can be found for around $250. So, if you bought these grills separately, it would cost you slightly more. Why would you want to do this? So you can replace them individually as they rust and fail.
Alternatively, you could purchase a higher-quality gas grill and a superior charcoal grill for approximately the same price, providing a greatly improved cooking experience. Regardless, I recommend buying the individual units instead of the combination grill.
